It's easier to understand the story in conjunction with the history background.
They are overcome by instinct and begin to act like a predator.

You already see some indication at the beginning, that the island isn't a paradise.

It's really hard to fathom, how their island delay ends.
Although some text passage overwhelms us, the author stay objective.

je mehr sie sich von der Zivilisation entfernen, umso brutaler/grausamer wird ihre Sprache.
The deliberate use of imagery enforces the reader's tension and compassion.
In Lord of the Flies the point of view shifts several times. For most of the story we see events through the eyes of the boys. We are on the island with them and we are close to what is happening to them. But sometimes the author steps into the story to give us information, for example when the parachutist land on the island.

At first they are willingt to continue their civilized life.
Because of the abrupt ending, the reader has no time to question, what was happened.
The conch effect, that the boys gather in a circle and conduct a democratic vote.
