Ich wäre sehr dankbar um Korrektur
He is one of the Ten World controllers and in charge for Western Europe.
In his youth he had the choice between giving up science and contribute(?) to peoples happiness or to be banish on a island.
He can discuss the philosophical principles of modern civilization with a person like John, who has a critical view of civilization.

dann wolln wir mal:
He is one of the ten World Controllers (name!) and in charge of Western Europe.
In his youth he had the choice between (either) giving up science(s) and contributing to people’s happiness or being banished to an island. (ich habe "either" ergänzt weil ich finde es ist so flüssiger. du meintest es doch im sinne von entweder...oder..?)
He is able to discuss the philosophical principles of modern civilization with a person like John, who has a critical view on civilization. (soll heißen: er ist in der lage dazu...?)
